Captain Moore set out to complete the challenge before his 100th birthday on April 30, wanting to give something back to the staff who treated him for a broken hip.

His initial target was to raise a modest £1,000.

He completed his 100th length yesterday, at the Bedfordshire home where he lives with his family, but he plans to carry on as donations continue to pour in.

Praising Captain Moore, Cllr Maureen Morrow said: “As Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council I want to thank Captain Tom Moore for his heroic effort to raise money for our healthcare workers.

“Captain Moore completed 100 laps of his 25 metre garden before his 100th birthday at the end of this month.

“You are an incredible and inspiring gentleman who has captured the heart of the nation and embodied the spirt of the whole country in doing their bit for the battle against coronavirus to support the NHS and save lives. Once a hero always a hero.”

At the time of going to print, Captain Moore has raised over £18 million for the National Health Service.
