Coronavirus: MP urges Newtownabbey residents to abide by Government restrictions

South Antrim MP, Paul Girvan, has urged residents across the region to continue to follow Government guidance during the coronavirus outbreak.

The DUP representative was speaking after it was announced that the restrictions would be in place for another three weeks.

Commenting on the extension of the measures, Mr Girvan stated: “It has been a tough first three weeks for most of us. A change in how we do things, the people we see, the food we have in our fridges.

“The next three weeks are every bit as important as the past three weeks. It is vital that we keep to the guidance, staying at home so we can slow the spread of Covid-19, protecting our NHS and saving lives that would otherwise be lost.

“Be in no doubt, those who have followed the advice have saved lives. When the outbreak began in Northern Ireland we were expecting a very high number of deaths by this point. Whilst we cannot forget the tragedy of those who have died in the past month, we must acknowledge the fact that it could have been so much worse at this point. We have three more weeks to save lives.

“The temptation is, as we see the daily figures of deaths decreasing, to give into the temptation to get out into the sunshine. The thought might be that others are going to be inside, so it won’t matter if we go out more than the guidance says. Be wise. There is no guarantee that there will not be second wave during this outbreak. We must protect those who would be worst affected by our giving-in to temptation.

“With that in mind I would ask that we all do what we must. Our duty as citizens at this time. Stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.”
