A spokesperson for First Ballyeaston Presbyterian Church said: “In light of advice issued by the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, all of our organisations, activities and Sunday services will now cease until further notice.

“We know you will understand the reasons for this unprecedented decision. We have begun investigating whether it would be possible to relay a shorter service using social media so that you may worship at home and in due course we will share more about this and any other steps we feel are appropriate.

“We are people of faith, not fear, so let us not panic. Instead, let us be Prayerful, Protect ourselves and others and also be practical in our care.”

Activities at Methodist churches have also been cancelled.

Commenting on the issue, a spokesperson for Carrickfergus Methodist Church said: “As instructed by The Methodist Church, there will be no further Sunday Services in our church until further notice.

“Our friendship centre is also closed until further notice.”

The Church of Ireland also issued advice to congregations across the province.

Commenting on social media, a spokesperson for the parishes of Larne, Glynn and Raloo said: “Advice from the Diocese of Connor. Church Services are cancelled. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly and I would encourage us all to pray for each other during this difficult time.

“We will be looking at how best to manage this situation and will keep you all updated. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

Echoing these sentiments, a spokesperson for Kilbride Parish Church said: “It has now been confirmed that all services in St Bride’s are suspended until further notice.

“Material to help people worship at home will be placed on our own parish website and will be continually updated. Please look after the senior folk as best you can.”

Earlier this week it was announced that the public celebration of Mass has been suspended in Catholic parishes across the Diocese of Down and Connor.

The decision comes into effect from today (March 18).
