Council celebrates Lisburn and Castlereagh community heroes

Local individuals and organisations from across the Lisburn Castlereagh area were recognised at the recent Mayor’s Community Awards.

The awards, held in Lagan Valley Island, recognised the hard work and dedication of all those working within our local community.

The talented young people from Fusion Theatre provided entertainment and the compere for the evening was John Daly.

Caring Communities Safe & Well Volunteer Befrienders won the Helping Hands Award, the Brian McDowell Voluntary Commitment to Your Community Award was presented to Fred Walsh, Lisburn Voluntary Laundry Service, and the Youth Leadership Award went to The Base Drop In Centre.

Alison Knox, LCC Community Trust received the Community Leadership Award and Dungoyne Football Club was named Charity of the Year.

The Making a Difference Award went to Tracey Elliott, St John Ambulance (Lisburn Unit), who also won the Mayor’s Choice Award.

Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Alan Givan, commented: “Throughout my mayoral term to date I have met many groups and individuals. I am delighted that we can acknowledge all the good work that takes places across a variety of sectors and how this influences the lives of so many people within our local community.

“The work of volunteers and organisations is truly inspirational and I commend all those who selflessly dedicate time to support others.

“It is this type of work that the Mayor’s Community Awards have been designed to give well deserved recognition to. Bringing all of these inspirational people under the one roof is our way of saying thank you.

“Well done to all our winners, the shortlisted nominees and to those who took the time to nominate their community heroes.”
