Department for Infrastructure urged to confirm 'clear plans' on restoration of Craigavon footbridges
Public representatives have voiced their concern following the sudden closure of two footbridges in Craigavon and called for a clear timescale on when they will be restored.
In a statement issued on Thursday (June 4), the Department for Infrastructure said the Maple Path and Parkmore footbridges would close from the same day.
"Detailed engineering inspections identified structural concerns, and it has been concluded that closure is necessary while a permanent solution is developed,” the statement said.
Following the announcement, local public representatives have aired their concern and frustration.

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart said many local residents had contacted herself and Councillor Margaret Tinsley regarding the closure of the footbridges.
"There is no doubt these bridges are an important part of daily life in Craigavon, providing key links across the area and helping people access local amenities and services,” the DUP MP said.
She said while the closure will be disappointing for many residents, public safety must always come first.
"My immediate concern is what can be done to minimise disruption for local people.
"I have been assured that a number of temporary options are being explored, including alternative crossings, underpasses and other linkages to help maintain access across Craigavon while longer-term plans are developed.
"I would be keen to hear residents' views on what temporary measures would help most.
"We also need to be honest about the scale of the challenge. This is unlikely to be a quick fix. Significant engineering work will be required to deliver a permanent solution, and it may be some time before these bridges can safely reopen.
"That is why DfI must recognise the urgency of this issue and move forward with clear plans and timescales.”
Craigavon Sinn Féin councillors Catherine Nelson and Jude Mallon said they were “deeply concerned” about the disruption the closures will cause to residents, workers, families, cyclists and pedestrians who use the bridges daily.
Cllr Nelson “We are deeply concerned by the closure of the Parkmore and Maple Path footbridges and recognise the significant disruption this will cause to local residents, workers, families, cyclists and pedestrians who rely on these important links every day.
"These bridges are a key part of Craigavon’s unique network of pathways and play an important role in connecting communities safely and sustainably. We fully understand the frustration and inconvenience that many people will now experience as a result of these closures.
Cllr Mallon added: “Public safety must always come first, and we note that the decision has been taken following detailed structural assessments. However, our focus now is on doing all we can to ensure that a permanent solution is secured as quickly as possible.
"We have secured a briefing with Department for Infrastructure officials and will be using that opportunity to seek clarity on the options being considered, the timescales involved and the steps required to reopen these vital links to the public.
"As local representatives, we will continue to work closely with the Department and all relevant stakeholders to press for a permanent solution and the reopening of these vital bridges.”

Alliance Upper Bann MLA Eóin Tennyson expressed his “shock and frustration” at the sudden closure of the footbridges.
"The Parkmore and Maple footbridges are well-used and important connections for residents in the area to access Craigavon Lakes and their closure will have an immediate, negative impact on active travel opportunities and access to local amenities,” he said.
"This decision will be doubly frustrating given it was only recently that a new footbridge was erected for Moylinn following its unplanned closure for a number of years.
"Alliance will be seeking urgent answers from the Department and the Minister for Infrastructure Liz Kimmins as to how these vital pedestrian links can be swiftly restored.”
