“Knowing all charities are finding it hard during these times we thought we would take up the challenge for this worthy cause.”

With all face to face training halted due to Covid-19 it was unfortunately not possible to involve the cadets on this occasion so SMI Gallagher and fellow Detachment Instructor SSI Gallagher set the plans into motion.

They trained over October and November by walking with 35lb rucksack and in boots and their chosen route would see them starting at Belfast City Hall and finishing at Carrickfergus Castle covering 270km.

On the day of their walk the weather was kind as they set off from the city centre and they eventually covered the 11.5 miles in just over three and a half hours.

As they crossed the finish line they were greeted by the sound of a band along with representatives of the Carrick RBL and the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Council, Cllor Peter Johnston.

To date they have raised over £650 through a JustGiving page along with other donations.

Both said: “We would like to thank all who donated and thanks to the Mayor and the members of the RBL who came along to support us on the day.”
