Firefighters praised after Larne flat rescue

Members of the emergency services have received plaudits following an incident in the Riverdale area of Larne yesterday morning (Wednesday, June 3).

Two appliances from Larne Fire Station, one appliance from Whitehead Fire Station, one appliance from Carrickfergus Fire station and one appliance from Ballyclare Fire Station were called to a fire in a property at Latharna House at 6.16am.

Detailing the rescue, a Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson said: “Firefighters removed one male casualty and a dog from the property. The male was transferred to the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and firefighters wore breathing apparatuses and used buckets of water to extinguish the fire.

“The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental ignition and the incident was dealt with by 6.53am.”

Commenting on the incident, a spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive said: “We can confirm that there was a small fire in one of our flats in Latharna House earlier this week.

“Minimal damage was caused to the property and the tenant was unharmed.”

Elected representatives have praised the emergency services who responded to the incident.

East Antrim DUP MLA, David Hilditch said: “Well done to the local NIFRS in saving this man’s life, unsung local heroes who are always there serving their local community, great work.”

East Antrim Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson said: “Another great job done by Larne Fire and Rescue Service saving life.”

Mid and East Antrim DUP group leader, Cllr Gregg McKeen said: “Great work by the Larne Fire and Rescue Service, a big thank you.”

Larne Lough Alliance councillor Danny Donnelly said: “Great work by our emergency services. We are very grateful to have them responding to such incidents in such a professional manner.”
