Commenting on the issue, Cllr Donnelly said: “I was contacted about apparent overuse of weed killer on the ‘Snake Path’ and Promenade by a resident who regularly walks in the area.

“I agreed with them that it looked unnecessary and very unsightly. I raised it with the council officers and they confirmed it had been done in error. They have stated that it won’t happen again in this area.

“Happily, thanks to efforts of those working in our parks we have recently been able to very significantly reduce our use of chemical weed killers across the borough. This is something I’ve been very keen to see.”

Speaking to the Times, a spokesperson for Mid and East Antrim Borough Council confirmed the damage was caused by applying weed killer to grass edges around a fortnight ago.

The spokesperson for the local authority added: “No complaints have been received by the council from the general public.”
