Greenisland couple receive greetings from the Queen and Mayor on diamond anniversary

A Greenisland couple enjoyed a socially distanced surprise as they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this week.

Sandy and Jean McAteer, who are long-standing residents of the area, were married on September 21, 1960 in Whitehouse Presbyterian Church.

Jean was an auxiliary nurse at Whiteabbey Hospital and Sandy was a caretaker at Greenisland Primary School, where he also stepped in on patrol crossing duties on occasions.

To mark their special milestone, they were joined outside their home by the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston, the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Andrew Wilson and Cllr Bobby Hadden.

Cllr Hadden, who has known the family all his life, said: “I was delighted to be able to arrange a visit by the Mayor, Peter Johnston and Deputy Mayor, Andrew Wilson, who presented flowers and a card to Sandy and Jean McAteer, who were celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary

“The couple also received a card from the Queen, celebrating the occasion.
