Health and wellbeing gym reopens in Newtownabbey

Fitmoms & Kids in Glengormley held an open day on August 2 to mark the reopening of the innovative facility following lockdown.

The gym, which gives mothers the freedom and opportunity to exercise, is operated by award winning health and fitness mentor, Leanne Evans.

The mother-of-three who encourages, and makes it possible, for women to keep fit was the winner of the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero Award for Northern Ireland 2019.

Following Sunday’s open day, Leanne said: “We have teamed up with Les Mills Fitness to deliver virtual classes for tots, teens and everything in between. This will be a great partnership for us and will be beneficial to our clients.

“I would also like to thank Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for providing funding to enable us to go ahead with our summer scheme which begins on Monday, August 10. A total of 20 families will be selected by contacting us via email @[email protected]

Leanne’s eldest son has Asperger’s and ADHD and her younger son has Global Developmental Delay. Leanne has developed an “autism friendly fitness sanctuary” at her Portland Avenue site.

She added: “We have incorporated ‘Mind your Mind‘ into our timetable to support females with mental health issues, supported my the lotto we will have monthly mindfulness and relaxation sessions for 90 minutes to help our girls find self balance, selfworth and strength.

“We are also offering complimentary Indian head sessions from August to help with the dip in mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Fitmoms & kids will be running a project for teenagers in the coming months in memory of Mark Scott.

Commenting on the initiative, Leanne explained: “The project will be named the Mark Project and will include mental health awareness, self defence, bootcamps and substance awareness.”
