Arisaig House, which was built in the 1860s as a shooting lodge, was taken over by the British Army as headquarters for Special Forces training in 1941.

The following year two battalions of US Rangers, who were raised in Carrickfergus in June 1942 and carried out their early training around the town, set off via the Larne-Stranraer ferry to make their way to the Highlands.

They underwent rigorous Commando training at Arisaig and elsewhere in Scotland before being at the vanguard of Allied forces who took part in Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa and Italy.

The Scottish estate was also used for SOE (Special Operations Executive) agents training and in one of the lower ground floor fireplaces there are still bullet holes from short distance target shooting.

Arisaig sits in a breath-taking coastal location with direct access to the sea and the Prince’s Beach – said to be where Bonnie Prince Charlie first set foot on the British mainland in 1745.

Arisaig is on sale with five other properties on the estate, with an asking price of £2.25 million. It is being described as one of the most significant Highland estates to come onto the market in recent years.
