It follows a call from South Antrim DUP MLA Pam Cameron for answers to be provided to the bereaved family.

In a statement to this newspaper, a spokesperson for the Trust said: “Between April 1 and May 11, 24 staff members tested positive for Covid-19 on wards C6 & C7. This includes a declared outbreak among staff centred around ward C6 that accounted for 22 of the 24 cases.

“There was no declared outbreak in ward C7. As we were in a period of sustained community transmission at the time it was difficult to clarify where the exposure happened. However, we adopted a precautionary approach of assuming exposure was within the clinical environment.

“There was no evidence of staff to patient transmission in ward C6 at that time.”

The spokesperson added: “In August a Level 2 SAI was initiated into the Covid-19 related deaths of two patients in Antrim Area Hospital, which occurred during the surge period. Neither of these patients were cared for in ward C6.

“However, we will ensure that the investigation covers increased incidences and transmission of the virus within the hospital during this period.

“In consultation with the family the investigation has now been escalated to a Level 3 SAI. Draft terms of reference have been agreed and a panel is being assembled.

“In advance of the findings of that review it would not be appropriate to make any further comment.

“The chief executive has apologised directly to the family involved and would wish to publicly extend her deepest sympathies and apology to the wider family.”

Mrs Cameron, deputy chair of the Assembly Health Committee, said it is important to have a clear picture of what occurred.

The DUP representative said: “It is vital that the review into these circumstances at Antrim area Hospital is speedily progressed to maintain public and staff confidence, and ensure any necessary action is taken. The family tragically affected by this situation require answers.

“Having spoken with the chief executive of the Trust, they are very clear that there is presently no evidence of staff to patient transmission during that period and precautionary measures were implemented.

“It is important for me to also state that the staff at Antrim Area Hospital are dedicated professionals who have been serving our community under extremely challenging circumstances.

“Their work has been exceptional throughout this pandemic. This review is about determining what has occurred and safeguarding all those within this hospital setting, including all staff and patients, as best as possible.

“I would urge the Health Minister to appoint a chair for this investigation urgently.”
