Larne exile passes away in Ontario after distinguished career

Local exile Robert Hugh Baxter, who passed away in his 90th year in Ontario, was born to Thomas and Ina Baxter in Larne in January 1931.

He was one of five children; Ina, Ria, the late Isabelle and the late Tommy, and attended Larne Grammar School, then earned a scholarship to Queen’s University in Belfast, where he would graduate with a B.Sc in chemistry.

Bob Baxter had a dedicated and distinguished career in the chemicals industry, started his career in Bahrain and India for Caltex Oil Refinery Ltd.

After travelling and exploring various countries, he arrived in Canada where he started working for CIL Ltd. (plastics division) in Montreal and then in Toronto. A man highly respected in his industry, he continued on when the division was bought by AT Plastics.

Following his retirement he enjoyed golfing, reading, gardening with a passion for roses, working on his cottage, and volunteering at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, as well as spending time with his grandchildren and his dogs.

The Larne man died after a lengthy illness and a private family service was held under Covid restrictions at Peel Chapel, Mississauga, followed by interment at Springcreek cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Carol, and children Douglas and Patti, having been predeceased by his son Jonathan in 1993, as well as a family circle in Canada, Northern Ireland and England.
