Larne Foodbank sees ‘significant increase’ in demand for emergency food parcels

The charity is striving to meet the increase in demand despite additional challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, Larne Foodbank said: “We are continually humbled by the support we receive from the people of Larne, both in food and financial donations. We are so grateful to all who have supplied food, toiletries and financial support.

“During the Covid-19 crisis we have seen a significant increase in those who use our service. In April 2020 Larne Foodbank saw a 113% increase in number of people needing emergency food parcels compared to the same period last year.

“This increase reflects the figures from the Trussell Trust in Northern Ireland who have reported a 142% increase in April 2020 which includes a 128% rise in the number of children receiving support. In response to these figures the Trusell Trust in Northern Ireland are asking the Northern Ireland Executive to consider a number of measures to ensure people in Northern Ireland are supported through these unprecedented times.

“Many of our wonderful volunteers at Larne Foodbank have had to reluctantly step back because of age or health reasons. An amazing core group continue to attend the Foodbank, sorting, weighing and packing food ready for our distribution sessions. With their continued dedication we intend to remain open throughout this crisis and beyond.”

People who need the service are referred by frontline services such as Christians Against Poverty, Education Welfare Service, Horizon Sure Start, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Antrim Coast Lions, Women’s Aid, doctors surgeries, health visitors and various social work teams.

“Please remember our ‘Schools Out’ scheme for meeting the needs of families during the holidays who have children receiving free school meals.

“No one in Larne needs to go to bed hungry.
