Larne group's 'community kindness Advent' in run up to Christmas

Larne Area Community Support is hoping the scheme will “spread a little hope and joy at the end of a very difficult year”.

Through their Facebook page, the group will post a new “task of kindness” every day between December 1-24.

The tasks aim to cover all areas of the community, from residents in care homes and local charities to local food banks and toy appeals.

While a number of suggestions have already been made, community feedback on the initiative is still welcomed. "If you can think of anything else you would like to see to spread kindness within the community and give others that much needed lift at the end of a difficult year, please do get in touch," the group said.

Larne Area Community Support was created at the beginning of lockdown in March, gathering 4,500 group members within a week.

Lynsey Poole, founder and one of the group’s administrators said: “It became a real space for positivity within the community; a place people would come for advice and support and feel safe at a time when social media can feel quite frightening.

“The group has been recognised by the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim for its support during the pandemic. During the Easter months, we were able to distribute Easter treats to care home residents with thanks to Lidl in Larne.”

The group was also approached by Extern Carrick/Larne, with whom Lynsey is a community health and well-being champion, to collaborate on a community resource guide.

Other projects the group have been involved in include a high visibility jacket campaign through the winter months, a community fridge project, and distributing mood boosting care packages within the local community.

"Through the months we have also managed, with incredible community support within the Larne area, to help several people in need gain white goods and furniture and necessary items. The group has really turned into an incredible force for good, fostering community spirit,” Lynsey added.
