Mayor leads tributes to former Carrickfergus councillor

A touching tribute has been paid to former Alliance Party councillor, Janet Crampsey, following her passing on August 17.

Mrs Crampsey passed away peacefully at Chester Nursing Home, Whitehead, aged 87. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward (Eddie).

Janet is survived by her children, sons Martin, Alistair and Patrick, daughters-in-law, Audrey, Anne and Sandra, grandchildren Luke, Matthew and wife Allana, Alex, Elise and great-grandchild Odin Edward.

The family, originally from Derby in England, moved to Whitehead in 1972 after Eddie started a job at the Courtaulds plant in Carrick.

Janet became involved in the Whitehead Community Association and was the key founder of the Whitehead Wednesday Club for Seniors. She was an active member of Brighter Whitehead and Ulster in Bloom. She also sat on the Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School board.

In the early 1980s she stood for the Alliance Party in the Carrickfergus Borough Council elections, being re-elected on a number of occasions and becoming an Alderman.

In 1999 she became the first Lady Mayor on the local authority.

Extending condolences to Mrs Crampsey’s loved ones, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Cllr William McCaughey, said: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing former Clllr Janet Crampsey.

“For many years, Janet served the people of Carrickfergus and the surrounding area faithfully in her role as a councillor and as a former Mayor of Carrickfergus Borough Council. We are grateful to her for her outstanding contribution as a councillor and all that she achieved for the people of Carrrickfergus.

“On behalf of my Elected Member colleagues, Chief Executive Anne Donaghy OBE and the officers of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, I extended our sincerest condolences to Janet’s family and friends at this sad time. Our thoughts will remain with them in the weeks and months ahead.”

A funeral service (Requiem Mass) was officiated by the Very Reverend Father Peter Owens at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Whitehead on Thursday, August 26, followed by burial in Islandmagee New Cemetery.

The funeral was attended by Alliance colleagues including East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson, Cllr Robert Logan, Ald Noel Williams and former party leader, Sean Neeson.
