The Army veteran, who passed away on February 2, captured the hearts of the Nation as he raised almost £33m for the NHS Charities Together, by walking 100 lengths of his garden path in Bedfordshire last year during the first lockdown, raising money in the lead up to his 100th birthday.

Paying tribute, Mayor, Cllr Peter Johnston, said: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

“Captain Sir Tom was an inspiration to the entire Nation during what has been a very challenging time.

“I thank him for his words of hope when we needed them most, and for making us smile through his bravery, tenacity and uplifting spirit.

“Captain Sir Tom’s incredible legacy will live on, and on behalf of the citizens of Mid and East Antrim, I extend my thoughts and prayers to his family at this sad time.”

Messages of condolence can be left at www.midandeastantrim.gov.uk/BookOfCondolenceSubmissions to the page will be open until Friday, February 26.

The Newtownabbey Times reported earlier this week how an online book of condolence has also been opened by the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr Jim Montgomery.
