The Newtownabbey-based football club wanted to help the worthy organisation after what has been a challenging year for many families.

The club’s committee backed an idea last month to ask all players and backroom staff to make a donation of £5.

Commenting on the fundraising drive, a spokesperson for the Carnmoney Road North team said: “It’s been a difficult year for all. We are a community football club that have friends and family in the local area.

“We look after each other and all feel it’s important to give back, if and when you can.

“We had no idea that this fundraising initiative would be so successful. This won’t be the last time we do this, so creating an online fundraising page is something to think about going forward.

“We’d like to say a massive thank you to all who donated. It has been a great response in a short space of time and shows that we really do care about our community.

“We’d also like to thank Jenkinson Logistics and Key Access NI. Two of our players work for these companies and their firms provided kind donations.”

Thanking Mossley FC for their generous effort, a spokesperson for Newtownabbey Foodbank said: “We’re so thankful to Mossley FC and all the other local groups and individuals who have gone out of their way to raise funds for the foodbank.

“It’s such a challenging time and use of our services has more than doubled. Christmas is especially busy so this money will make sure we can meet the needs of those most vulnerable now and over the coming months.”

The money was presented to the foodbank on December 4.
