Almost 50 homes are planned for New Mossley in Newtownabbey through a new social housing scheme.

The 49 properties are to be developed by Connswater Homes, at Milewater Road, if the planning application is given the go-ahead by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

It is the second social housing development to be considered by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Planning Committee recently.

Part of the proposed New Mossley scheme is located on an area of open space in the estate.

The planning committee was advised that there is “normally a presumption against the development of existing open spaces”.

However, in this case, members were told that the applicant has been able to “demonstrate that there is a need for social housing provision in the area and the local community has identified an alternative area of undeveloped land nearby, which is owned by the Housing Executive, for the use of walking trails and a wildflower meadow”.

Meanwhile, a 63-home development by South Ulster Housing Association will be located at Knockenagh Avenue, in Rathfern, on the site of the former Carnview children’s home which went on the market in 2017.

It will comprise of two 21-unit apartment blocks, 11 two-storey and eight 2.5 storey semi-detached houses and two bungalows suitable for wheelchair users.

Twenty apartments will be provided for people over the age of 55 years and their carers.

DUP Alderman Philip Brett, chairman of Antrim and Newtownabbey’s Planning Committee, commented: “This is a welcome development which the DUP in conjunction with the local community has been lobbying for.

“This will go some way to meeting the social housing need in the area

“The DUP are committed to working with local communities to ensure further developments take place to meet the needs of the local area.”
