New premises for Newtownabbey Men’s Shed

Newtownabbey Men’s Shed is moving to a larger premises after securing £178k for a three-year project.

The Shed will launch at 1C Ferguson Centre, Manse Road on Thursday, October 1 at 11am.

It will be opened by the Mayor, with other local political representatives in attendance.

A statement from the group read: “During this current climate and high levels of unemployment, we will now be able to open the doors to not only older men, but both men and women aged from 18 years and up.

“The aim of the Shed is to help address isolation and loneliness, promote positive mental health, develop new skills and build new friendships through enjoying social inclusion.”

Chairperson Gordon Neil added: “The Shed opened its doors for the first time four years ago with only five original members, and had moved a number of times looking for a permanent home.

“Today we have around 50 members and are now in a position to develop on a much larger scale, thanks to the funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and their players.”
