Newtownabbey civic buildings to be lit up for International Day of People with Disabilities

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will light up its civic buildings purple to celebrate International Day of People with Disabilities (December 3).

Antrim Civic Centre, Mossley Mill and Ballyclare Town Hall will be lit up to mark the event.

The occasion will also be marked with a special online event organised by the Department for Communities’ Disability Policy Team and Disability Action.

This year’s theme is ‘Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post Covid-19 world.’

The Minister for Communities will open the event and the Disability Strategy Expert Advisory Panel will update on their work in making recommendations on the development of the new Disability Strategy.

There will also be contributions from participants in Disability Action’s ONSIDE Project about the benefits they have experienced from taking part in the project. The NI Civil Service Disability Champion, Ronnie Armour, will close the event.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr Jim Montgomery said: “I am pleased the council is supporting this initiative.

“People with disabilities are faced with challenges every day and this has only been exacerbated with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“The council works tirelessly to ensure its facilities, events and programmes are inclusive for all and throughout these challenging times we have been signposting additional support for families and individuals with specific needs.”
