Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will be lighting up their civic buildings blue and green on Saturday, May 8 to mark World Fairtrade Day.

Fairtrade is a global movement for change that works to guarantee a better deal for disadvantaged, developing world producers and farmers.

Its primary objective is to tackle poverty, improve working conditions and secure fair terms of trade through the purchase of Fairtrade certified products.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Clr Jim Montgomery said: “We are proud to be a Fairtrade Borough and by lighting up our buildings to support World Fairtrade Day we are further demonstrating our commitment to promote and use fairly traded products.

Civic buildings across the borough will be lit up to mark World Fairtrade Day.

“Each one of us are part of the Fairtrade movement and we all have the power to drive long term changes, not only with our shopping choices but by helping to spread the message. Choosing Fairtrade is a vitally important way to put more money and more power into the hands of farmers.”
