Old School Surgery to use Greenisland church hall for Covid jab roll-out

Greenisland Old School Surgery will use the Church of Ireland hall at Station Road as a distribution centre for the roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines.

To assist with the delivery, the surgery is seeking volunteers to help with signposting patients, managing carparking, helping to clean chairs and storage of equipment at Church of the Holy Name, Station Road.

The church is currently closed for worship due to Covid restrictions.

According to figures released on Monday by the Department of Health, 91,954 vaccines have taken place in Northern Ireland, 68,664 patients have had a first dose (HSC staff and care home residents and staff); 13,949 have received a second dose.

GPs have carried out 9,341 vaccinations.

From Monday, domiciliary care workers from the independent sector will be able to receive the Covid-19 vaccine at the vaccination centres.

The Department has said that the phased programme will see dental, pharmacy and optometry teams being given access to the booking system “shortly”.

East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has called for teachers and education staff to be made a Covid-19 vaccination priority.

The DUP representative says the decision to close schools in Northern Ireland and the consequences of such an action will be profound and have a lasting effect on children and their development.

In a statement, Mr Wilson said: “It is clear that a prolonged closure of schools is not sustainable and measures must be taken to ensure that our teaching and education staff are vaccinated as a priority.

“I am pleased that the Education Minister has proposed that vaccinations for teaching staff be prioritised and I hope that the Executive will agree to such a proposal as soon as possible.”
