Paul is praised for his courage

The courage of a stroke survivor from Lurgan has been recognised at the recent Life After Stroke Awards celebration.

Paul McLean was nominated in the Adult Courage category at the Stroke Association’s recent Northern Ireland Life After Stroke Awards celebration, which was held at Belfast Harbour Office.

Lurgan man Paul Mclean survived a stroke in June 2016 at the age of 40 and though he lives with nerve damage and aphasia, he continues to make a remarkable recovery.

It was thanks to his wife Susie who knew the FAST signs (Face, Arms, Speech and Time) and was able to recognise that Paul was having a stroke and immediately called 999. When Paul returned home from hospital he then received timely speech and language therapy including support via the Stroke Association’s Communication Plus programme and as a result, has recovered some of his communication ability.

Paul is now an Ambassador for the Stroke Association and devotes a lot of his time and effort to raising public awareness of stroke, as well as vital funds for the charity.

In August 2018, Paul embarked on the famous Camino de Santiago walk to fundraise for the Stroke Association.

Paul’s ‘Big long walk’ has now raised an amazing £5000 for the charity and, never one to rest on his laurels, he is now busy planning his next adventure.
