Peter brings his amazing 55 year career with McDonagh’s to a close

Peter Hagan has brought an amazing 55-year career at TW McDonagh Ltd (formerly McDonagh Furniture) to a close.

Having worked in nearly department, and now touching on 71 years of age, Peter celebrated his retirement recently with a barbecue and presentation from the firm - with an opportunity to look over old photographs and reminisce.

For most of Peter’s time with the business it was called McDonagh Furniture and manufactured furniture which was sold to retail shops.

He worked on the bench making pieces, in the polish shop, drove lorries for a long spell, managed the fitting department and managed the stores.

He helped with photography and set building, setting up exhibitions in Scotland and England and was excellent with customers, collecting them from the airport and looking after them. Quite a remarkable variety of work.

Unfortunately that business had to close due to much cheaper imported furniture and a new business was created doing commercial and residential fit out work. Director Terry McDonagh said: “At the start of the new business Peter, Ross (McDonagh) and myself were the only employees so Peter was a great help getting the new business started. He and I fitted out jobs in Old Bond Street, London and installed the meeting table for the G8 summit in Enniskillen. That table now sits in the Thatcher Room, No. 10 Downing Street and was shown in a recent photo of Boris Johnston with his new baby in the newspapers!

“I could go on and on and we really appreciate Peter’s contribution to the business over so many years.”
