They were following in the footsteps of major West End and Broadway performers, who have told Charles Dickens’ heart-warming tale of Victorian London, written for stage by Lionel Bart, for more than half a century.
A fantastic performance by the whole cast and crew, directed and produced by Mr Conor O’Brien, contributed to a memorable telling of this powerful story, with fine performances from all, notably Luke Johnston in the title role of Oliver, Sarah Fulton who played Nancy.
Rory Harkness as Dodger, and Louis Donnelly as Fagin. Pupils had a wonderful and enjoyable experience over the last few months in preparation for the final shows. The cast included pupils from all year groups who pulled out all the stops in singing, dancing and acting and brought energy and magic to the stage with their enthusiasm and fun.
During each of the three performances the audience were treated to wonderful songs featuring several solos – all accompanied by the band, directed by Musical Director Mrs Gormley. Songs like ‘Food, Glorious Food’ and ‘As Long as He Needs Me’ have become as well known as Oliver’s plea for ‘Please, Sir I want some more!’
Miss Black oversaw costumes, make-up, props and scenery, as well as the invaluable and skilful input from staff and volunteers at CHS. The Former Pupils’ Association provided refreshments which was very successful and appreciated by all in attendance.
And as soon as the performances had finished, the tributes poured in, with positive reviews by parents and staff alike, praising the brilliant cast, the wonderful music and the spectacular set and costumes.
Principal, Miss Evans, said: “I would like to pay tribute to the incredible hard work and dedication of colleagues Mr O’Brien, Mrs Gormley and Miss Black without whom none of it would have been possible. Pupils have excelled – in acting, singing, technical, and stage management, and we are very proud of their superb contribution. It was also wonderful to see so many people in the audience and the amazing community support for the show.”
