Plans to convert Coleraine stone barn into holiday accommodation submitted to Causeway Coast & Glens Council

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has received plans to convert a stone barn to holiday accommodation.

The recently-submitted planning application seeks permission to convert the barn, located within an agricultural holding on Drumcroone Road, Killykergan, into two first-floor self-catering holiday let units.

According to an accompanying Planning Statement, the barn forms part of an established farmyard complex associated with the applicants’ working family farm, occupies a “prominent yet well-contained position” at the entrance to the farm lane and “represents an attractive example of traditional rural architecture with significant potential for sympathetic reuse to support rural tourism”.

The barn has a history of residential use dating back to the 1960s, when it provided accommodation for farm workers, and has more recently served as temporary living accommodation for the applicants during the construction of their family home.

“Since that time, the residential accommodation has fallen into disrepair and, together with the remainder of the barn, is currently used for general storage,” the statement added.

“The building remains structurally sound and retains its traditional character, making it highly suitable for conversion and long-term preservation.

“The proposal seeks to sensitively convert the existing first floor of the barn into two one-bedroom self-catering holiday let units.

“The existing former residential accommodation will be refurbished and modernised to provide one high-quality holiday unit, while the remaining first-floor space will be converted to create a second one-bedroom unit.

“The accommodation has been designed primarily to cater for couples, walkers and visitors wishing to experience the surrounding countryside.”
