Funding for the scheme, which commenced in September, was approved by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council earlier this year, with RMC Construction Ltd appointed to complete the extensive works.

The centre will be closed to the community while work takes place and it is estimated that the facility will reopen by the end of the year.

The three-month refurbishment programme will provide increased disability access to the centre, an improved external facade, and improvements to the existing roof.

Plans also include an enhanced multi-purpose floor in the main hall, refurbished toilet facilities and storage, and improvements to the ceiling structure in the main hall.

The works are part of the Greenisland Masterplan, with the Greenisland Regeneration Group made up of elected members, alongside community and statutory representatives.

Welcoming the progress was Alderman Noel Williams, a member of the Greenisland Regeneration Group. “Back in 2015 I was able to secure new windows for the centre to tide it over but am now absolutely delighted with the complete upgrade the building is receiving,” he said.

“The insulation under the floor will really make it a cosy centre; the cold that used to come through the floor will be kept out by the splendid material being fitted underneath.

“The old lights have already gone, as has the ceiling, and a new one already in place with energy efficient lighting.

“There was a concern at one stage that the floor would not be refurbished, but we have found the funding and I am delighted that the refurbishment is going to be a complete makeover.

“All is progressing at pace and on schedule; I couldn’t be more pleased and I hope the nursery anchor tenants, the Irish dancers and the many more in the community who will want to enjoy these new facilities will appreciate what Mid and East Antrim Council is doing here for the benefit of all.”
