Macmillan Cancer Support recently launched a step challenge for its Move More NI participants to virtually climb iconic buildings around the world as a way to motivate and connect them and give a positive goal to focus on.

Now in a move to support for those living with cancer across the borough, plus encourage more individuals to look after their physical and mental health, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is encouraging wider participation among its staff and residents.

In partnership with the council, the Move More programme launched in the borough in November 2019 with the aim of providing the support that people living with cancer need to become and remain active and enjoy an improved quality of life.

A council spokesperson said: “All we are asking you to do is to have fun whilst increasing the number of steps you take each day. It is that simple and it’s right on your door step, literally.

"Get your whole family involved and see who gets to the top of some of the world’s iconic building first, without ever having to leave your home.We would encourage all residents of Mid and East Antrim to get involved and tag us in what buildings they have climbed on their virtual journey around the world."

Aaron Irwin, the Move More Coordinator for Mid and East Antrim fully supports extending the fun challenge. “We’ve identified how many steps it would take to climb certain landmarks, and we’re encouraging people to virtually climb as many landmarks as they can by building up their steps every day using a front door step, bottom stair or kerb, and keeping track of their daily tally," he said.

"There is a pack to support those getting involved and of course, we are encouraging participants to take part at a level that is appropriate for their level of fitness. We may not be able to physically travel the world at the moment, but there’s no limit on our imagination."
