Sean Hegarty in marathon fundraiser for vandalised school

Comedian Sean Hegarty is swapping the stand-up routines for running shoes this weekend in a bid to raise funds for a school hit by a vandalism attack.

Sean will be running 26.2 miles (lapping Craigavon Lakes) to raise funds to help with repairs at Tullygally Primary School where thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused when windows were shot out with a pellet gun.

For Sean it will be his first marathon in 18 years - his last was the Belfast marathon - and he assures us he’s looking forward to beating the time he set all those years ago.

Of course, he’s not starting from scratch as he’s been running since January and attends Fitzone SRG at St Anthony’s, Craigavon, with his son - giving him a chance to spend more time with the youngster and get fit together.

He said: “I’ve been building up the distance over the past few weeks and this gives me an opportunity to push myself and raise funds for a school I run past every day.”

He’s aiming to raise £3,000 for the school which was damaged sometime on Wednesday night/Thursday morning with a number of windows broken using a pellet gun.

Sean is a winner of Ireland’s Funniest Joke 2018 and star of Ireland’s Got Talent.

He is known as his alter-ego, comedy character ‘Rodney’, and has racked up over 35 million video views online.

A writer, event host, presenter on Cool FM, podcaster, actor and comedian, Sean and his wife actress Diona Doherty Hegarty have now branched into writing and before lockdown had been commissioned to write five stage shows.

The couple also had a viral video a few years back - the Derry/Londonderry hitchhiker sketch from BBC NI’s ‘Late Licence’ show.

Now Sean won’t be hitching any lifts tomorrow morning as he undertakes his marathon at the lakes - and he’s hoping to beat his four and a half hour time from 18 years ago.
