SF veto on NI memorial stone lambasted by DUP

The DUP’s William Irwin said the proposal was backed by other parties and was ‘at zero cost as Unionist parties were committed to funding the stone’.

He said: “It is utterly shameful that Sinn Fein exercised a veto on this issue and this approach is deeply offensive to the Unionist population.”

He explained that the design of the stone was simply a replication of the land mass that is NI with an inscription denoting the centenary milestone.

He described the use of the veto as ‘reprehensible’ adding it ‘only serves to sour relations within the Assembly.

“The proposed inscription was very deliberately purely informative, with a simple factual description of the meaning of the stone.

“Indeed this was reflected by the fact that all the other parties in the Assembly found the proposal acceptable except, of course, Sinn Fein.

“This simple issue has shown the entrenched and detached approach of Sinn Fein on this issue and as they often shout aloud about equality and respect, they have spectacularly and unsurprisingly failed miserably to practice what they preach.”
