Sinn Féin Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon councillor makes 'difficult decision' to step down
Sinn Féin has announced that Sorchá McGeown is stepping down as a councillor for the Lurgan area on Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
Cllr McGeown said the “difficult decision” had been made “after careful consideration” due to ongoing health and family reasons.
“Serving our community has been an honour and a privilege, and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout my time in office,” she said.
"This decision has not been made lightly. However, at this time, I need to prioritise my health and dedicate more time to my daughter.”

Sinn Féin has selected Chloe Devine for co-option to replace Cllr McGeown.
"I know she [Chloe] will be a fantastic asset to our council group and to the wider ABC area,” said Cllr McGeown.
Originally from Glasgow, Chloe moved to Lurgan five years ago with her fiancé and quickly became involved in community and political activism.
She has worked on every Sinn Féin election campaign across Ireland since 2021.

She currently works as a healthcare worker within the Southern Health and Social Care Trust.
Chloe is also involved in community organising. As chairperson of the Lurgan St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, she helped to deliver the town’s first St Patrick’s Day celebration and festival in more than a decade.
She is also a founding member of Lurgan Pride and, until recently, served on the committee of the Lurgan branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

She said she is “deeply honoured” to have been selected for co-option onto the council.
"Sorchá has been a dedicated representative and a strong advocate for the people of Lurgan and I wish her and her family well,” she said.
"As a Sinn Féin activist, I was privileged to support her during her last council campaign, and over the years she has become both a valued friend and an important mentor to me as a woman in politics.
"Lurgan has been home to me for five years now, and it feels like I’ve always belonged here. I am excited to take on this new role and to play my part in helping make our community better for everyone.
"I am committed to building on the work Sorchá began and ensuring our community continues to have a strong, active voice on the council."
