Traffic chaos as motorists stuck in harbour tailback

Motorists found themselves stuck in lengthy queues at the weekend as a result of a section of the Harbour Highway being closed for roadworks.

Cllr Mark McKinty met Roads Service after complaints from motorists.

“The early hours of Saturday morning saw the first in a number of planned closures of the Harbour Highway. Despite a diversion being in place, there was traffic chaos in the Harbour area, and this continued into the evening,” he said.

“I was contacted by a number of people who were not only angry at the situation, but also concerned that the gridlock would inhibit the safe and speedy movement of any emergency services which needed access to the area.”

A Roads Service spokesperson said: “Roads Service schemes are planned several months in advance and this work was originally planned to be completed over the two weekends Friday, June 21 – Monday, June 24 and Friday, June 28– Monday, July 1.

“Unfortunately due to bad weather, the first weekend closure was cancelled and resurfacing works were completed over one weekend Friday, June 28 – Monday, July 1. The works commenced at 5pm on Friday, June 28 and were completed by 2.30am on Monday morning

“Unfortunately due to the strategic role the Harbour Highway plays traffic congestion was expected. Roads Service apologies for any inconvenience caused, however works are being carried out to improve the road network.”
