Tributes paid to young GAA player whose sudden death has saddened Coalisland community
A Co Tyrone schoolboy who died suddenly on Tuesday has been described as “a truly good soul”.
Hugh John Campbell, a Year 12 pupil at St Joseph's College in Coalisland, was also a “proud” Gaelic footballer.

In a tribute his school described him as having “a presence that was impossible to forget.”
A death announcement reads: ‘Campbell Hugh John, suddenly, at home in Coalisland. Hugh John, RIP, much loved son of Brian and Ciara, cherished brother of Aileen and Brianna, dearest grandson of Hughie and Eileen ( O’Neill, Altaglushan, Galbally) and the late John and Eleanor (Campbell, Annagher). Deeply regretted by his Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and family circles. Safe in the arms of Jesus.’
In a social media post St Joseph’s said: “It is with broken hearts that we share the news of the passing of one of our Year 12 pupils, Hugh John Campbell.
“Hugh John had a presence that was impossible to forget. He brought light into every room, speaking to everyone and making each person feel valued. In a world that can often feel hurried and indifferent, he was kind, present, and genuinely, extraordinarily good. He had a joyful nature, a warm smile, and a sense of humour that lifted those around him. Always considerate and polite, he gave his time to others and made people feel seen and included.
“Hugh John was also a proud Gaelic footballer and a dedicated member of St Joseph’s Coalisland. His love for the game was a huge part of who he was, and he wore it with pride. Recently, he attained his first Ulster medal in the U16 Pat King Championship – an achievement that meant so much to him.
“He came from a family with deep roots in our school community. His mother is a valued member of staff, and his sibling is a past pupil. His loss is felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
“Hugh John Campbell was a truly good soul who left a lasting mark on everyone he met. Our love and thoughts are with Hugh John’s family at this devastating time. We stand with you, grieve with you, and will carry Hugh John in our hearts always
“Rest easy, Hugh John. You leave us far too soon, but you leave us better for having known you.”
Derrytresk GFC in Coalisland also extended their “deepest sympathies” to the Campbell family and “our friends at Oileán an Ghuail Na Fianna on the sad passing of Hugh John RIP.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all who mourn him at this difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam dílis.”
Friends also paid tribute to Hugh John on social media, one said: “Rest in piece Hugh John, you were a nice and kind loving lad, and i will always remember you for how funny you were.”
Another stated: “Absolutely heartbroken when i heard this sad news of the most kindest lad ever going to miss the crack.”
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
