Tributes to Portadown FC chairman Ronnie Stinson who has died

Tributes have flooded social media after the death of Portadown FC chairman Ronnie Stinson yesterday evening.

Portadown Football Club described him as a ‘faithful clubman and dedicated volunteer of the club’.

In a statement online, the club said: “It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce the sad passing of Portadown FC Chairman Ronnie Stinson.

“After a long illness, Ronnie passed away yesterday evening and everyone at the club would like to pass on their sincere, heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Ronnie.

“A faithful clubman and a dedicated volunteer of the club, Ronnie will be sadly missed by all at Portadown Football Club and the wider community in which he served for the majority of his life.”

Also paying tribute was Eden Reds who described Mr Stinson as an honorary member.

The club said: “Everyone at Eden Reds are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Portadown FC Chairman & Honorary Eden Reds member Ronnie Stinson.

“Over the years Ronnie has been a fantastic servant to both Eden Reds AND Portadown Football Club.

“He put the club before himself and everyone at Eden Reds are grateful for all Ronnie did over the last number of years to stabilise and ensure the survival of Portadown FC through some dark dark days.

“He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.

“Our thoughts are with James and the entire family circle at this very difficult time.”

In neighbouring Lurgan, rival team Glenavon also paid tribute to Mr Stinson.

It said: “Glenavon Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the death our neighbour’s chairman, Ronnie Stinson.

“We extend sincere sympathy to everyone at Portadown Football Club and to Ronnie’s family circle.”

“Ronnie was a quiet, genuine, unassuming gentleman,” Glenavon FC chairman Adrian Teer said this morning.

“He was widely respected within Irish League football and deserves tremendous credit for steering Portadown through some very difficult times during the last decade.

“The Premiership has lost a real football man and is the poorer for his passing.”
