The programme, which follows public health guidelines around the prevention of the spread of Covid-19, features things for people to get involved with virtually.

It comes after the borough’s “hugely successful and well received” Virtual VE Day events, which included social distancing street parties and a ‘Ringing Out for Peace’ initiative linking local churches.

In addition to facilitating drive-in church services across the borough, council has planned a number of virtual events over the next few weeks, including the Knockagh Somme commemoration. Council is also facilitating the sold-out Farmers’ Bash at Ballymena Showgrounds on July 3, 4 and 5.

The anniversary of the Battle of the Somme will be marked through a virtual programme on the day.

Dalriada Festival will also have a new look this year with organisers rebranding the family celebration as Dalriada Home Fest scheduled for July 18.

The Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston, said: “It is really encouraging to see that council has kept events and community celebrations high on the agenda.

“The Virtual VE Day celebrations brought so much joy to our borough during the earlier phase of the coronavirus lockdown, and it was fitting that we were able to honour those who gave their lives during World War Two despite not being physically together.

“It is really pleasing to say that council has led the way in marking significant events and ensuring that we secure the festivals for the future as part of our economic recovery plan.

“I would encourage everyone to keep an eye on our social media channels for the latest updates on what’s planned over coming weeks and months.”
