Persistence pays for John

A local man’s persistence at tracing the origins and general history of Carvacloughan Independent LOL 22 appears to be paying off.

John McGregor has been appealing through the Times for any information on the Lodge and last week, he got a pleasant surprise when he was handed the scissors used by Miss Marion Kane to cut the banner at an unfurling in 1959.

The scissors were lent to John so that he could take a picture of them for his records.

John has been doggedly pursuing the history of the Lodge given it has such close links with neighbouring Moyarget; indeed both Lodges shared the same hall during their early days before Carvacloughan opened their own premises in 1909.

Various accounts of events at the hall are in the possession of John, but he needs more so that he can update his book ‘The Faithful and True’ which traces the history of Orangeism in County Antrim.

“I am not looking to keep any memorabilia that is in the possession of former members of the Lodge or band. I just want to take a picture or copy of them for my records. They don’t even need to come out of their own home,” John stressed.

When John eventually republishes his book, he plans to donate the proceeds to charity.
