Personal goals achieved at residential

A TOTAL of 38 young people from Lincoln Courts, Creggan and Lifford took part in a three-day residential recently as part of the 'GOAL Project's' Community Safety Programme.

The young people aged between 10 and 17-years-old have been working together on the programme for eight months. Accompanied by their own project leaders, the group of young participants have explored issues of cultural identity and community safety. They were also involved in a series of indoor and outdoor activities during their residential at Raspberry Hill, near Donemana. These included, snooker, badminton, bowls and archery.

The young people also experienced a night outdoors bivouacking and had fun on the outdoor rope equipment, including a zip-line.

All of these activities allowed them to personally challenge themselves and look at developing team-building strategies for improved co-operation and trust.

This programme gives young people the opportunity of seeing past the negative stereotypes that are a legacy of the country’s recent conflict. As it develops, a more strategic approach will be used to address the legacy of suspicion, fear and mistrust. It will challenge participants to understand the issues which emerge from identity, culture, history, symbols, sectarianism and racism.

This programme will encourage young people to develop skills that will enable them to engage in their communities as active citizens and make positive contributions to broader society.
