Peter lays foundations for construction career

PETER Stinson, 28, from Ballymoney, was awarded student of the year for 2009 in Programme Area Building and the Built at Belfast Metropolitan College.

Peter, a recent graduate from the College, took the brave move two years ago to leave full-time employment to obtain a higher level qualification in the field of construction.

The HND programme at Belfast Met provides students with opportunities to work on live engineering projects with local companies. Through Belfast Met’s successful partnership with industry, Peter got the opportunity to work on a live sustainable construction project as part of his course with NI based contractor, Gilbert Ash.

After completing the project, Peter sent his CV to Gilbert Ash and they immediately offered him a summer placement job, looking after the sustainable construction and waste management plans within the company.

Speaking about his achievement, he says;

“I enjoyed the wide range of subjects covered in the course and it gave a true picture of all the different aspects in the construction industry. The quality of teaching was excellent and the group project work gave me an invaluable insight and experience into the industry”.

Peter has now embarked on the degree programme in Construction Engineering and management at the University of Ulster and is now working part time with Gilbert Ash. Upon qualifying, hopes to work full-time with Gilbert Ash and enjoy a long career with the company.
