Peter takes on the tower for charity

Local man, Peter Branker from Dromore is getting set to abseil one of Northern Ireland's most iconic and tallest buildings to raise money for local charity Friends of the Cancer Centre.

Peter is one of the brave people taking on Friends of the Cancer Centre’s Take on the Tower Abseil, which will see supporters from across Northern Ireland abseil Belfast City Hospital’s famous yellow tower block on Saturday, April 22.

Peter is calling on local people to follow his lead and sign-up to take on the Northern Ireland’s 4th tallest building and make a 190ft adrenaline filled descent right in the heart of Belfast.

Peter knows how important the work of Friends of the Cancer Centre is following his own experience of cancer. Peter was first diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer behind his eye, at the age of 13 which resulted in the loss of his right eye. Then at the age of 18, the cancer came back and Peter had to have his lower left leg amputated. Peter was supported by the doctors and nurses at Belvoir Park hospital and has been a great supporter of the charity since then.

Looking ahead to the abseil he said: “Living life as a survivor reminds me how lucky I am. I have been able to overcome my illness and given a second chance. I have had some issues with the late effects of radiotherapy but I’ve learned to be thankful for even the smallest gifts. Yes, my experiences with cancer have left me with physical scars, having lost my right eye and my lower left leg and I’ve also lost close family to cancer, but I enjoy life and this is why supporting the charity is so important to me.

“The Take on the Tower Abseil is the best in Northern Ireland by a mile and it is great craic. I took part in the event last year and loved it so much that I had no hesitation in signing up again this year. It’s definitely worth challenging yourself to take part and I can assure you, you won’t regret it. In fact, you’ll want to do it again immediately afterwards.”

Registration for the event is £20 per person and each participant is asked to raise a suggested minimum sponsorship of £100 for the charity. Participants must be over 14 years of age.
