Peter Weir pays visit to Jordanstown School

The school has been offering specialist education to children who are deaf and/or have visual impairments for over 150 years.

The school specialises in meeting the needs of pupils of all abilities aged four to 19.

Commenting at the recent visit, the Minister said: “I welcome the opportunity to visit the school and meet with all the pupils and staff. This is a key part of my role as Education Minister and one I greatly enjoy. It is always interesting to meet with pupils across Northern Ireland and hear about their different experiences.”

The Democratic Unionist Party representative concluded: “I would like to thank everyone involved in the visit for their warm welcome and I wish all staff and pupils every success for the future.”

Adam Smith, Principal of Jordanstown School said: “On behalf of the Senior Management Team and everyone at Jordanstown School, it gave me great pleasure in welcoming Education Minister Peter Weir to our school. I was delighted to give the Minister a tour where he had the opportunity to meet our fantastic pupils, learn some sign language, visit a number of classes, take in a performance from our singing and signing choir and receive a thank you letter in Braille.

“I look forward to working with the Minister in continuing to develop Jordanstown School as a leading centre of excellence for young people who are deaf or visually impaired.”

Mr smith added: “The main focus of our school is to ensure we put the pupils at the heart of everything we do and deliver a curriculum which ensures all the pupils reach their maximum potential and that the class programmes ensure their academic, social, personal and emotional needs are met.”
