And their concerns have been backed by both the SDLP and Sinn Féin.

Sinn Féin Cllr Fergal Lennon asked local MLA John O’Dowd to help find out the current position of Transport NI in relation to requested upgrading of the Meadowbrook/Old Portadown Rd junction.

He said that, after a series of accidents at this ‘dangerous crossroads’, Sinn Féin had met with Transport NI to ask for the junction to be upgraded and made safe. He said since taking up office as a Councillor he had written to Transport NI three times and has yet to receive ‘either their own proposals for ensuring public safety at this location or a timescale for the implementation of the proposals presented to them’.

He added: “There is no doubting the obvious hazard or the potential for lives to be lost and for that reason I have asked John O’Dowd to intervene on behalf of those who have no choice but to use this dangerous junction.”

SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly and Cllr Declan McAlinden have also raised concerns regarding traffic problems at Meadowbrook. Mrs Kelly said: “Traffic and pedestrian usage has increased in the surrounding area due to new developments and there has been an increase of traffic accidents in this area. It will not be long before there is a tragedy. I would urge DRD to deal with these issues as a matter of priority.”

Transport NI said: “There are currently no plans to implement traffic calming in this location. We are reviewing the operation of the crossroads. A traffic survey has been ordered and we will carry out the review in the autumn.”
