Picking up mate leads to court

A 23-year-old Ballymoney man was fined a total of £400 and disqualified from driving for 12 months when he appeared at North Antrim Magistrates Court on Wednesday on a number of motoring offences.

George McElreavey, of 14 West Field Park, Seacon, admitted driving while unaccompanied for which he was fined 100, 250 and banned for one year for not having insurance and a fine of 50 was imposed for not displaying L plates. A summons for having no licence was withdrawn.

A solicitor for the PPS told the court that at 12.30 a.m. on January 15 last, police observed a car being driven by defendant at Seymour Street, Ballymoney.

They spoke to the driver who had identified himself as another person before providing the correct details. When asked why he had given the wrong details McElreavey said it was because he only had a provisional licence.

At the time defendant said he was picking up a mate.

A solicitor for McElreavey said his client accepted he should not have been on the road. He was only driving a short distance in order to conduct an errand.
