Pictures to speak a thousand words in MindWise project

Mindwise, a leading mental health charity which aims to support those who are at risk of and affected by severe mental illness and problems, has recently received small grants funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland to develop their ‘Unfolding Tales’ project.

Working with service users across seven of MindWise’s resource centres in Northern Ireland over a 12 week period, including their centres in Lurgan, Newry and Portadown, the charity is using the £9,743 funding to explore complex issues relating to mental health problems and their wider impact, while also challenging issues relating to stigma and society’s perceptions.

Each session, facilitated by a visual artist, aims to promote access to the arts for people with severe mental health problems, helping them to gain new skills while encouraging them to tell their own personal story or ‘unfolding tale’ through the medium of art.

Whilst raising the confidence and self-esteem of participants, the project will also give those involved the opportunity to share their achievements by showcasing their work at an end of project exhibition in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall.
