Pipe Band Championships

BALLYMONEY Borough Council has agreed to express an interest in hosting the Annual Co Antrim Pipe Band and Drum Major Championships in 2012.

The issue was raised during a recent Full Council meeting by Cllr Mervyn Storey.

Addressing members he said: “I would like to have a discussion about the possibility of us expressing an interest in hosting the Scottish Pipe Band Association Annual event. It was held in Ballymena Showgrounds in June this year and I think this Council should consider hosting the event in 2012.

“It is a very prestigious event and draws a lot of people from throughout the province. Northern Ireland has also had much successes over the years in such championships.

“I would therefore like to propose that this Council should put their name down to host the event and moves forward in making arrangements accordingly.”

Cllr Bill Kennedy seconded the proposal adding that Ballymoney had ‘ideal places to host the event’ and it would ‘attract people right across the community’.

Cllr John Finlay also stated that: “I was recently talking to a businessmen, who is also a councillor, in Portrush who said that the event brings a lot to the area and is one of his best trading days.”
