Plan for '˜Greenway' to Glens of Antrim

The local authority is behind plans for two borough ‘greenways’ which are off-road, traffic-free routes offering a safe environment for people to make everyday journeys by bicycle or foot.

On Tuesday night, Council’s Community Planning Committee gave the go-ahead for the establishment of a Steering Group to oversee and promote the development of two Greenways proposed for Greenisland to Monkstown/Newtownabbey and Ballymena to Cushendall.

An officer’s report informed councillors that the Ballymena to Cushendall route could take in the footprint of the abandoned Ballymena, Cushendall and Red Bay Railway, which winds through the Glens of Antrim, and could potentially be called “Glens of Antrim Greenway”.

The committee’s approval, on the proposal of Cllr Andrew Wilson, seconded by Cllr Audrey Wales, to establish a steering group to oversee their development, will go before full Council next month for ratification.
