Plan to address rural housing problems

THE Housing Executive has produced an action plan to address the housing problems of people living in rural Londonderry and elsewhere, which are often worse than in urban areas due to geographical isolation.

The Housing Executive has developed a new draft Rural Action Plan for the next two years to address the housing needs of people in rural areas.

A Housing Executive spokesperson explained: “People in rural areas suffer the same economic and housing problems as those living elsewhere but these are often made worse by geographic isolation.

“The draft rural action plan outlines our priorities over the next two years and details our actions to address housing need, improve housing conditions and regenerate communities.

“We want to work with rural communities and others to address their concerns. We have developed this action plan following an examination of the overall work we are planning to undertake over the next two years up to 2015.

“We are now seeking the views of people from rural areas to ensure their concerns are highlighted and addressed. “

Key actions in the plan include: increasing the supply of social and affordable housing; improving housing conditions; improving energy efficiency; tackling rural homelessness; regenerating rural communities; developing rural community involvement; promoting community cohesion.
