Planning approval for Sunlea Centre

Plans for a youth centre at the Ballycastle Road in Coleraine were granted unanimous approval by the Causeway Coast and Glens council at a meeting.

The proposals were brought before the council’s planning committee at Cloonavin on Wednesday, June 24 for approval.

The plans for the Sunlea Youth Centre were submitted by the North East Education and Library Board last year and first came before the Northern Ireland planning Service in September last year.

Permission has now been granted for a new, free-standing building and associated car parking with amended site access at the Harpur’s Hill site.

Council official Shane Mathers told councillors at the meeting: “No one has objected to this application. There are only a few issues with the proposal.”

One of the issues, he said, was “the loss of a small amount of land originally zoned as housing.”

He added, however, that “the loss of such a small amount of land is acceptable. Approval is recommended to the committee.”

Alliance Party councillor Barney Fitzpatrick proposed that the youth centre should be granted planning permission.

The proposal was seconded by TUV councillor Sharon McKillop and gained unanimous approval of all councillors on the planning committee.
