Planning delay holds up new homes project

Planning Service has confirmed that it is still awaiting comment from Roads Service before it can make a decision on a deferred application for a new 130-unit housing development at Ballycraigy Road.

The plan to build 35 detached, 51 semi-detached, 28 terraced dwellings and 16 apartments on land including numbers nine and 11 Ballycraigy Road has been in the planning system for several years.

At their monthly planning meeting on August 5, councillors were informed that planners have been awaiting a response on the application from DRD Roads Service for over a year.

Barry Diamond, Principal Planing Officer for Antrim and Newtownabbey, told the meeting that the system is “clogged up with applications that have stalled over the years”, adding that the department hopes to get a lot of older applications cleared by later this year.

He said in this specific case, Roads Service has been in direct discussions with the applicant’s agent and that planners are awaiting a resolution between the two parties.
