A spokesperson for NI Water explained that planning permission was being sought in order to secure the best possible price for the land if it is sold in the future.

The Belfast Road site has been identified by NI Water as “surplus to requirements” and the utility provider is considering selling off the site but a spokesperson has stressed that no final decision on the sale of the land has yet been taken.

“NI Water can confirm it applied for Outline Planning Permission on a site on the Belfast Road, Lisburn,” said the spokesperson.

“Derryvolgie House has been identified as surplus to requirements and is considered suitable for disposal. In identifying such a site, NI Water must ensure that any disposal will not have an adverse impact on current or future provision of water and sewerage services.

“When considering disposal of surplus lands, NI Water must ensure it gets best price, achieves value for money and high standards of propriety are maintained,” she continued.

“As part of the disposal strategy, and following professional advice, NI Water may seek to secure Outline Planning Permission for land likely to be used for housing or commercial development before marketing.

“NI Water has made no final decision on when it will dispose of Derryvolgie House and any decision will require the approval of the Utility Regulator,” she concluded.
